I see many people who just want a better handling experience because driving comfort in long rides depends heavily on how you can handle the vehicle. Also, some want a better performance on the street to get an advantage in races.
In such cases, if budget is not a matter, I often suggest B12 pro kit from Bilstein. When it comes to shocks, this brand is my favorite, not gonna lie. But that’s not the only reason to suggest this.
B12 Pro Kit offers an instant and visible improvement in your driving experience. Besides, it lowers the vehicle to around 30-50mm, giving it a sportier look.
You want to know more about it, I know. So, here I’m sharing my views as well as what others say about it in this Bilstein B12 pro kit review. If you have a few minutes, stick to me.
A Bit About Bilstein
Bilstein has a 150-year history of innovation. It started its journey in 1873. Later in 1927, it entered the automotive industry to ensure better performance of different types of vehicles. It all started with chrome-plated bumpers.
With innovative minds in charge, Bilstein started introducing several inventions, including- side car jacks, improved suspension systems, etc.
Bilstein currently has more than 25 types of shocks and other suspension components. With continuous innovation, this brand is offering new and improved suspension systems regularly. B12 is one of the most innovative shocks you can get from this brand.
Structure and Material
B12 Pro Kit is a set of Bilstein’s B12 shock and Eibach’s pro kit performance springs. B12 is one of the finest designs from Bilstein, made of high-quality and durable materials. Thus, it is strong and able to handle harsh conditions.
The Eibach pro kit is also made of high-quality material. So you won’t face any issues with the build quality and material.
Performance
According to Bilstein, B12 is made to offer comfortable handling in both regular and sports applications. Besides, Eibach claims their pro-kit springs to be able to offer a better ride quality by absorbing small and medium impacts. Thus, the combination of these two should be something street performance lovers want.
The scenario is exactly the same in this case. Most users, including some of my clients, have said they’ve seen instant improvement after installing the kit. Most of them discussed smoothness on bumps. Some also claimed to have way better cornering performance.
Some reviews have talked about ride stiffness in the beginning. Though I haven’t seen anything like this, you may experience it.
Appearance of Vehicle
If you want to lower your vehicle, this is a good pick. It allows you to shorten the vehicle up to 50mm for a more racing car-like appearance. Lowering 50mm may seem to be nothing much, but you’ll like the overall appearance once it is done.
This lowered appearance improves aerodynamics and allows you to enjoy higher speed and better control.
Use Case
This kit is typically installed for street racing applications. Racing enthusiasts love it because of the amount of control it ensures.
None of my clients have installed it for racing purposes. So, I have a little idea about its performance in street racing. However, on the street, it drastically improves how you handle the vehicle and how your vehicle handles the bumps. You can expect a better position after getting it installed, I guess.
Installation
It is designed to be the perfect replacement for your OE shocks. So, installation won’t be a hassle. I’ve installed it several times. It comes with every part you’ll need.
Also, you won’t have to buy special tools to install it. Regular hand tools will be fine. However, getting a spindle housing spreader and spring compressor will make the task easier.
If everything goes smoothly, you won’t need more than 5 hours to install all four shocks.
Price
Bilstein has kept the price of the kit in a premium range. Based on the model of your vehicle, you may have to spend around $1,050-$1,250 for a set of four shocks.
This is the approximate price range. To save some bucks, surf through popular websites or mechanic shops around you and compare the prices. This would give you a better price.
Durability
I haven’t heard much about the durability of these suspensions. I’ve checked a lot of reviews, but none discussed the durability.
Being made of high-quality material, they last pretty long, I guess. I’ll let you know when I find more information about it.
Warranty
Bilstein offers a 90-day workmanship and material warranty for this kit. So, if you find any defect caused by poor material or workmanship within 90 days of purchase, you can claim a warranty. But, they could offer a better warranty policy for a product priced in such a premium range.
It is better to discuss the warranty with the seller before purchasing.
Problems with Bilstein B12 Pro Kit
If you ask me about the problems you may face with this kit, I would say that you won’t face such things. In my opinion, the price is a bit high. But if you’re willing to spend this amount on a shock set, it won’t be a bad investment.
People who love the twin tube design may not love it because of the monotube design. This is not a problem exactly. Instead, it is more about personal choice. I think the monotube design is not an issue as long as it offers you the performance you want.
Where to Purchase Bilstein Shocks?
You can find a dealer around you by visiting Bilstein’s official website using the dealer location options. There you’ll find B12 and other shocks from Bilstein.
If you’re into online shopping, you can get B12 Pro Kit from Amazon. Also, it can be found in other online shops dedicated for car parts, including O’Reilly Auto Parts, Auto Zone, etc. Spend time online to check availability in your favorite online shop.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between the B12 pro kit and B14?
The main difference between the B12 pro kit and the B14 is their purpose. B12 is aimed at vehicle owners looking for a lower and sporty look. On the other hand, drivers looking to improve their driving dynamics are the target audience of B14.
For this, the structures are also different. The B12 pro kit is a combination of B12 shocks and Eibach lowering springs. On the other hand, B14 is a Coilover shock.
Can I install Bilstein B12 pro kit by myself?
Though vehicle DIYers can get the kit installed, expert help is always recommended. An expert mechanic can handle the job better with proper alignment. This ensures the safety and offers smooth performance.
How much does it cost to install Bilstein B12 pro kit?
The installation cost of B12 pro differs based on several factors, like- the expertise of the mechanic, installation complexity, additional services, and more. Including everything, the typical installation cost for this kit is around $400-$800. This cost is a bit high as the kit includes four shocks.
To get a more précised idea, you can talk to your local mechanic shops or Bilstein dealers in your area.
Final Verdict: Is Bilstein B12 Any Good?
I guess you’ve already found the answer. Still, if you ask me this question, I’ll say- yes, it is.
But that’s not true for everyone. If you’re okay with lowering your vehicle and the price tag it comes with, you can go for it. I’m saying this because many people don’t want to lower their vehicles.
If improving the handling a bit is your only concern, you’ll get a few shocks priced lower than this kit. But Bilstein is good for people who love long rides and street racing with better aesthetics. You can handle the car with more precision when it is installed.
