Ford has brought a lot of variation in its engine types, and the capacities are different. Changes came year by year. You will find some consistency in a few years, and then some changes come.

From 1999 to 2003 there were only 3 types of engine, then it was for low range and local use. As well, the oil capacity was the same as 6 quarts.

From 2004 to 2014, the engine types were the same for the next 10 years. But the oil capacity changed into two types, 6 and 7.7 quarts.

A lot of changes came in later years, and in 2018, 2019, and 2020, there were the most variations in Engine type and Oil Capacity. In the past 2 years, it has been more Eco-friendly and has Hybrid Option.

Based on the chart, you can see that the Oil type has two categories: 5W20 & 5W30. Here 5W20 was used till 2010, and then an upgraded 5W30 was recommended for some models.

Oil Capacity Based on Engine Type

Oil Capacity based on Engine Type

Here is a short cheat sheet; you do not need to go through many specs and technical features. I have checked all the engine types, and this short formula will help you know the engine type’s oil capacity. Having a clear concept of your engine will give you the freedom to take care of it. You need to match with your engine type here:

  • 3L Ti-VCT V6 FFV F150 vehicle has 6 quarts of oil capacity
  • 7L EcoBoost V6 engine F150 comes with 6 quarts of oil capacity
  • 0L engine F150 has 8.85 quarters of oil capacity
  • 5L EcoBoost V6 engine F150 comes with 6 quarts of oil capacity
  • 0L Power Stroke engine F150 requires 6.5 quarters of oil capacity
  • High Output 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine F150 has 6 quarts of oil capacity

You can check the Owner manual or the Ford website for more detailed information.

The Benefit of More Oil Capacity

More oil capacity means more power and more mileage. Let me explain that when you have a 2.7L engine, it will give you an easy drive from home to the office. It is good enough if you want to go for a countryside tour.

But is that perfect for offroading? Nope! It would help if you had a more powerful truck for that. Countryside visits, offroading, desert tours, mountain climbing, everything is possible with 5.0L and 6.2L engines. They have more power and more oil capacity. Do they burn more oil? Yup, they need more oil for more strength.

Now, what engine type will you choose for yourself? Based on your need-based.

Ford is one step ahead in this planning; they keep customer needs in mind while launching new models. So, they have a lot of variation for us.

How to Find the Oil Type Easily?

There are two easy methods. First, you check your Owner manual that comes with your F150; it will tell for the right oil you need. Don’t have it? Search online and get a soft copy. That is the best option.

The second one, your Oil cap, marks which type you need. It will come with a mark of 5W20 or 5W30 on it. But why is this engine oil recommended? API recommends the best for the Ford F150. So, use the best and stay cool on the road.

Why Should We Use 5W20 & 5W30 Oil Types?

American Petroleum Institute (API) recommends oil brands for American vehicles. Ford also follows the recommendation and suggests using 5W20 & 5W30 in their pickup trucks. Just be sure which oil is needed for which engine type.

It’s easy: check the Owner’s manual of your truck, and the oil cap, or try online resources.

How Engine Oil Works

It keeps the engine smooth and cool. While driving, the engine has a lot of activity inside, and the inner pistons and accessories need smoothness. Engine oil is the lubricant to keep them oily. But it is not the least; it also keeps the engine clean. If there is warm weather and a lot of dust, engine oil keeps the engine clean, as the oil catches all dirt and keeps the engine clean. And that’s why the engine oil is dirty after use.

Ford suggests two types of engine oil 5W20 & 5W30. Just check the chart and use the one that fits. If you make a mistake, it will make you spend some money to maintain the engine. So, keep your eyes open. Be sure to change your engine oil after 4000-5000 miles of the drive.

Is an Oil Filter Essential for Oil Capacity?

Sure! Each oil filter is made for individual engine types to manage more or less oil filtering. Just change your oil filter after each 7500 to 10000-mile drive. You can drive more, but the performance will be shaky. It will have an impact on oil quality. But if your filter needs to change before that, you have oil issues. Keep your eyes open; the gas station is well-maintained and gives proper oil.

Your oil filter needs to change for two reasons, it’s used too much, or the oil is dirty. Check the filter model matches your F150 engine type.

How to Check the Oil Level?

Check your engine oil level when the engine is cold and neutral. Or, you will get the wrong reading and will misuse more oils. Use a dipstick in the engine compartment beside the oil chamber. Your dipstick is beside the oil cap. Bring it out, clean it with a towel then put it in the oil chamber. It’s perfect when you see the oil level between two dots at the bottom. Check it every week, and change the oil when it’s low.

Till now you have a lot of information, now you need to pick the right one as per your need. I hope this guide gives you everything you need to know about Ford F150.
